Caring for your little one\u2019s teeth is critical to ensuring their overall health and instilling good habits. \u00a0With that in mind, we thought we\u2019d share some tips on pediatric oral hygiene.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Don\u2019t wait to start cleaning.<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0A clean damp washcloth does wonders for the gums.\u00a0 \u00a0As\u00a0 soon\u00a0 as that first tooth pokes through, begin twice daily brushing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Get that baby to the dentist!\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>It should happen sooner than you might think.\u00a0 Dr. Tillman recommends that the first visit<br \/>\noccur by the age of 1 or 2 years old, but no later than 3.\u00a0 The first visit is really more of a meet and greet.\u00a0 Dr Tillman wants to make your child feel comfortable with someone else looking in their mouth.\u00a0 This will pave the road for future \u201chappy visits\u201d.\u00a0 They will get to sit in the BIG CHAIR with Mom or Dad and they will get to meet our hygienist and Dr. Tillman.\u00a0 We will do as much of an<br \/>\nexamination as they will sit through.\u00a0 Ideally Dr. Tillman wants to take a look in their mouth, checking their gum tissue and counting teeth.\u00a0 As your child grows Dr. Tillman will do more and more at each visit until they are ready for their full blow cleaning every 6 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Using the correct items:<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Toothpaste<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; until age\u00a03, you should only be using a small dab (grain of rice size) of fluoride\u00a0toothpaste. \u00a0From about ages 3 to 6 that can increase to the size of a pea.\u00a0If your child is not able to effectively spit, have them tilt their mouth so the paste dribbles out into the sink so that they won\u2019t swallow it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soft bristled toothbrush<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013Dr. Tillman recommends using something very soft and age\/size appropriate &#8211; children\u2019s brushes are sold with recommended age ranges listed, so they should be easy to find.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Floss<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; you should begin flossing for your little one as soon as they have two teeth that touch. \u00a0Doing this as a family can<br \/>\nencourage good habits for both you and your baby.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rinses<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 If you\u00a0are uncertain that your little one can rinse and spit without swallowing, we suggest avoiding rinses.\u00a0 Typically around age 6\/7 they will have this skill down.\u00a0 At this point Dr. Tillman recommends using a fluoride rinse twice a day under close adult supervision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Make it FUN!! <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Usually singing 2 rounds of \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d is the approximate amount of time your little one should be brushing.\u00a0 <em>KEEP THEM EXCITED!!<\/em>\u00a0 Once your child is a little older, let them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste.\u00a0 This can motivate them to use the items that they have selected.\u00a0 Just be sure to double check their work and help them get to the areas they might have missed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My Baby is Getting Teeth!!
