Does going to the dentist make you feel nervous, anxious, or afraid? Do these negative emotions prevent you from attending regular dental check-ups and cleaning appointments? If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 25 percent of adults around the world have some level of dental anxiety, and for many of them it’s strong enough to keep them from visiting their dentist for even routine care. The good news is that sedation dentistry can help, but for some, untrue myths about this treatment may hold them back from getting the attention they need. Here are a few common misconceptions about dental sedation, and how this smile-saving treatment could help transform your teeth, and your life!

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses sedatives such as nitrous oxide and oral sedatives during dental treatment to help the patient feel comfortable and calm. It can be used for even routine cleaning and exam appointments, or for more involved procedures like fillings, root canals, or cosmetic dentistry.

Common Myths About Sedation Dentistry

Here are a few common myths about sedation, and the truth about this dynamic branch of dentistry!

Nitrous Oxide Makes You Laugh

While yes, it is known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide probably won’t make you laugh uncontrollably. It will, however, help you feel calm and relaxed, so you may be more likely to see the humor in a joke or situation than you would if you were feeling nervous or tense.

It’s Addictive

Nitrous oxide is not addictive, but in the wrong hands can be misused like any other medication. Oral conscious sedation is delivered in pill form; however, your dentist will only prescribe enough for your appointment, and this should not be enough to be habit forming.

It Acts as a Truth Serum

Dental sedation will not make you confess any deep, dark secrets or reveal any truths to your dental team; however, please rest assured that whatever you discuss while under sedation will be kept completely confidential.

The Effects Take a Long Time to Wear Off

With oral conscious sedation, you will need to have a trusted friend or family member drive you home, as the effects of your medication could take a few hours to wear off. However, it should be completely out of your system by the next morning. With nitrous oxide sedation, the side effects should be gone shortly after your dentist stops treatment. To do this, he will have you breathe pure oxygen for five minutes. After that you will be able to resume your normal activities, including driving yourself home.

Remember, sedation dentistry is an excellent way to promote feelings of calm and relaxation during any dental procedure. If you are nervous or fearful of your upcoming appointment, speak to your dentist in advance about adding sedation to your treatment so you can get the care you need without the worry.
