Is It Ever Too Late to Get Invisalign?

Getting a straighter, more evenly spaced smile may seem like it’s just for kids, but the truth is that the desire for a gorgeously aligned grin is an understandable goal for people of any age. Often, people wonder if they’ve ‘missed the boat’ when it comes to orthodontic treatment, especially if they are an older adult or already had braces when they were younger. Here’s a closer look at how Invisalign can help patients of any age achieve healthy, straight teeth, no matter how many trips around the sun they’ve taken!

Am I Too Old for Invisalign?

The good news is that there are no age limits to receiving treatment with Invisalign. In fact, children as young as six years old can begin using aligners for early intervention, while adults of any age can achieve beautiful, permanent results with this versatile treatment.

However, despite the age of the patient, it is important to understand that not everyone will qualify for Invisalign. That’s because for all it can correct, there are certain issues that are better suited to traditional braces, including closing large gaps and correcting severe bite issues. It is also not recommended for patients with very small or misshapen teeth that have difficulty fitting in an aligner, or those who have restorations such as dental bridges.

How Does Treatment with Invisalign Differ in Adults?

With Invisalign, treatment in adults will be quite similar to children and teens but may take a little longer because their jaws are stiffer and denser. This means the teeth may need some extra time to move into their new positions, and a longer adjustment period once they’re there. In fact, while most treatments in children, teens, and younger adults typically take about 12 to 18 months, older adults may need to wear aligners for 18-24 months depending on the severity of their issues.

What Are the Benefits of Invisalign for Adults?

Invisalign is an excellent opt ion for adults who want to straighten their teeth without the hassle of dealing with traditional braces. While they still work well and deliver beautiful results, old fashioned wire and bracket orthodontics can be uncomfortable, difficult to keep clean, and make it a challenge to maintain a professional appearance.

Conversely, because the aligners are clear, Invisalign is a more discreet treatment option. Not only are they virtually undetectable in your mouth, but they are also easily removable for eating and cleaning your teeth, so the focus can stay on you, and not the equipment correcting your smile. Furthermore, Invisalign treatment is typically much faster than traditional braces, so you won’t have to wait as long to get the healthy, evenly spaced grin you’ve been hoping for.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Whether you’re a good candidate for Invisalign depends on your individual oral and overall health and the complexity of your orthodontic issues. Your dentist is the best person to determine if you qualify for treatment, so it’s important to schedule a consultation to be evaluated. If you aren’t a good candidate, you may be better suited to traditional braces. Your dentist can discuss this with you at your appointment and answer any questions you may have about how best to align your smile.

Remember, when it comes to straightening your teeth, there’s no such thing as being “too old” for Invisalign. If you’re ready to get a healthier, more evenly spaced grin with clear aligners, schedule a consultation with your dentist to get started!
