Airports and highways see some of their heaviest traffic around the holiday season due to so many people traveling to see family and friends. While it is certainly a wonderful thing to visit your loved ones for a special occasion, it can be hard to keep up with your oral hygiene when you’re away from home. Here are a few tips to keep your smile safe and sound during your holiday journeys.

Schedule a Dentist’s Appointment Before You Leave

Nothing will spoil a trip quite like developing a throbbing toothache while you’re on the road. By taking the time to see your dentist before you travel, you can be sure that your teeth will be in good shape for your journey. Your dentist will clean your teeth and examine your mouth for any issues so they can be corrected before they become worse. Be sure to leave some time between this appointment and your trip in case you need a follow-up visit.

Mind Your Toothbrush

Many people throw a toothbrush in their toiletries bag before traveling and consider the matter taken care of, but how clean is it inside that bag? Bacteria love multiplying in damp darkness, and the matter gets worse if you throw your wet toothbrush in there immediately after using it. Do your best to leave your toothbrush out before you store it so it has time to dry off. If you have to pack your toothbrush wet, remember to unpack it after you arrive so you can let it air out and dry off before you need it next. Otherwise, you could use disposable toothbrushes so you don’t need to worry about germs at all.

Be Aware of the Water Quality at Your Destination

Even though the public water supplies in America are in generally good shape, some parts of the world aren’t so lucky. Brushing your teeth or rinsing your toothbrush with tainted water can cause illness. Research ahead of time so you know about the water quality at your destination. If you need to drink bottled water while you’re there, you’ll also need to use it when brushing your teeth as well.

A travel hygiene kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash can serve you well on the road during the holidays. By taking a few extra precautions, you can be sure that your excellent oral hygiene can continue while you travel.
